New Research Claims Every Hour Of Watching TV Shortens Lifespan By 22 Minutes

Anyone who spends six hours a day in front of the box is at risk of dying five years sooner than those who enjoy more active pastimes, it is claimed. Researchers say that watching too much TV is as dangerous as smoking or being overweight, and that the “ubiquitous sedentary behaviour” should be seen as a “public health problem”. Experts from the University of Queensland, Australia, write: “TV viewing time may have adverse health consequences that rival those of lack of physical activity, obesity and smoking; every single hour of TV viewed may shorten life by as much as 22 minutes.” Referring to Australian and American guidelines that suggest children should spend no more than two hours a day in front of a screen, the academics conclude: “With further corroborative evidence, a public health case could be made that adults also need to limit the time spent watching TV.” Although health campaigners – and parents – have long warned of the dangers of watching too much television, its effects on life expectancy have never before been calculated. In a paper published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, Dr J Lennert Veerman and colleagues looked at the results of a survey of 11,247 Australians taken in 1999-2000, which asked about time spent watching TV, and also mortality figures for the country. They constructed a model in which they compared life expectancy for adults who watch TV to those who did not, and worked out that every hour spent glued to the screen shortened life by 21.8 minutes. For those in the top 1 per cent of the population who watch six hours of programmes a day, they “can expect to live 4.8 years less than a person who does not watch TV”. The researchers say that watching TV is among the most common forms of sedentary behaviour, along with sitting in cars.”Because TV viewing is a ubiquitous behaviour that occupies significant portions of adults” leisure time, its effects are significant for overall population health.” England’s Chief Medical Officer, Sally Davies, said: “Physical activity offers huge benefits and these studies back what we already know – that doing a little bit of physical activity each day brings health benefits and a sedentary lifestyle carries additional risks.
MODEL: PATT OGAR “That’s why the UK’s Chief Medical Officers recently updated their advice on physical activity to be more flexible, right from babyhood to adult life. “Adults, for example, can get their 150 minutes of activity a week in sessions of 10 minutes or more and for the first time we have provided guidelines on reducing sedentary time. “We hope these studies will help more people realise that there are many ways to get exercise – activities like walking at a good pace or digging the garden over can count too.” Maureen Talbot, senior cardiac nurse at the British Heart Foundation, said: “Sedentary behaviour such as vegging in front of the TV is practically a cultural institution these days and it’s good to relax for a while, but this study supports the view that too much of it can be bad for our health. “Many of us make a conscious decision not to smoke because we know it’s bad for us, and this study suggests that more of us should make the same kind of pledge about lounging around and watching lots of TV. “Introducing more activity to our daily lives, whether it’s walking to the shops instead of taking the bus, using the stairs instead of the lift or taking up active hobbies like sport or gardening mean we won’t spend as much time in front of the TV where we are likely to pile on the pounds.” Source: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/8702101/Every-hour-of-TV-watching-shortens-life-by-22-minutes.html

Meet The Teenage Girl Who Has Transformed Herself Into A Living Cartoon Character

With her enormous, glassy eyes, purple hair and coquettish pose, this girl could have stepped from the scene of a Japanese anime film.
Anime fan Anastasiya Shpagina has transformed herself into a living cartoon character, complete with miniature waist, vividly-coloured hair, and a cupid’s bow pout. Originally from the Ukraine, the 19-year-old takes style inspiration from the cartoons and computer animations that have a huge following in Japan, and has even adopted a Japanese name – Fukkacumi. Anime characters often feature huge eyes and heads that are disproportionately large in comparison to their body. Shpagina, who is just 5ft2ins tall, is already reported to have slimmed down to just over six stone in her attempts to resemble a living anime character, and is said to spend 30 minutes painstakingly applying her dramatic make-up to each one of her eyes. It is thought Shpagina may go even further in her efforts to achieve her desired look, with some reports claiming she intends to undergo surgery on her eyes to make her resemble her anime idols even more closely. The teenager, who has over 10,000 fans on Facebook, also posts videos on YouTube demonstrating how she applies her make-up. One clip, in which Shpagina reveals to fans how she achieves her ‘flower fairy’ look, has been watched more than 150,000 times Shpagina is not the first young girl to take style inspiration from the world of fantasy. American Dakota Rose – or Kota Koti – has been dubbed the ‘real-life Barbie’ thanks to her doe-eyed stare and dainty proportions. The teenager has amassed a global audience by posting fashion and beauty tutorials on YouTube. posted by PATT OGAR

Woman had two Teeth Removed from her left Eye by doctors after 23 years

In what seemed like an unbelievable event, doctors had their hands full in addition to their already dazed minds .Doctors operating on a tumour in Nagabhushanam Siva’s left eye were stunned to find the two fully-formed teeth embedded inside. When asked, the 23year old said: “I was born with an abnormal left eye and it continued to swell over the years. My family was too scared to send me to see a doctor and during the last few years it has grown much bigger. I had blurred vision so eventually I consulted a doctor for help.” Teratoma was the diagnosis that was given to Nagabhushanam by doctors at a government hospital in Chennai, southern India. The tumour had pushed her eye inside its socket and protruded the skin, blocking her vision and partially damaging the optic nerve. The growth also left her unable to move her eyeball and had developed lazy eye syndrome.
Doctors said they had seen a few past cases of Teratoma with tooth-like tissues embedded in the tumour, but fully formed teeth were very rare. Hospital Director, Dr K Vasantha, said: “A Teratoma is a mass of tissue that contains cysts and sometimes contains hard tissues but fully grown teeth is so very rare.” The removal of the tumour caused severe damage to Nagabhushanam’s optic nerve which has tragically left her permanently blind. “Because it was left untreated all these years the tumour was allowed to grow to extraordinary lengths. That resulted in the optic nerve damage,” Dr Vasantha added. Orbital Teratomas are rare embryonic tumors composed of tissues that grow in the attempt to form an organ. The first case of this condition was reported 149 years ago. Only 70 such cases have been found worldwide ever since.
