Youth corps members are now to receive N19, 800.00 as allowance with effect from March 2011, the Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Maharazu Tsiga, has announced.

Mr. Tsiga made this known in Abuja on Monday during a visit by a team from Barry University, Miami, Florida and Africans in Diaspora Partnership.

The NYSC members were receiving N9, 775.00 before now, and President Goodluck Jonathan had in his 2010 campaign tour, promised the increase.

According to Mr. Tsiga, the allowance of the NYSC members will be paid in arrears, to include the 2010 Batch ‘B' members, who finished their service year on July 7.

Mr. Tsiga expressed his happiness with President Goodluck Jonathan, for considering the plight of the corps members, stating that the scheme would work hard to realise its objective.

He also expressed satisfaction with the visit of the team, stating that it was timely, as seven youth corps members were successful in the Entrepreneurs competition organised by the Africans in Diaspora Partnership.

"I can assure you that the resources expended in the training and empowerment of the seven entrepreneurs has not been wasted since all of them are doing very well.

"Indeed, we see in them great potentials for wealth and job creation in the near future, that is why we are looking forward to greater and expanded opportunities for more corps members as talents abound in the scheme,'' Mr. Tsiga said.

He said that the contribution of NYSC members underscored national relevance of the scheme, adding that the scheme would ensure that the gains were not lost to the threat of post-service unemployment.

According to him, the agencies which partnered with the scheme on skills acquisition are the Central Bank of Nigeria, National Directorate of Employment and the MDGs Office.

Earlier, Adewale Alonge, leader of the delegation, had praised the scheme for its foresight and readiness to ensure that NYSC members were well equipped to stand on their feet, without looking for government employment after the scheme.

Minister doles out N2.2million to corps members

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Muhammed, Friday gave out cash rewards of N2.2 million to 14 corps members of the 2010 Batch ‘A’ set for their outstanding performances in the territory during their service year.
Speaking during the presentations, National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Director- General, Brig-General Maharazu Tsiga said the awards will serve as source of motivation to corps members to enable them render more selfless and dedicated services to the nation.

While commending the FCT minister for his unflinching support to the scheme, Gen. Tsiga called on various state governments to give prominence to the welfare and security of corps members serving in their states.

Eight of the corps members who bagged ‘Honours Awards’, received cash rewards of N200,000 each, while six others that got ‘Commendation Awards’, got N100,000 each.

Those who received awards were Dr Okebaram Chukwudi, Dr Emwanta Egbe, Eze Chukwuma, Adeleke Adenike, Dr Madugwulike Chijioke, Obi Laurentia, Aledare Elisha and Ofurum Vivian.

Others included Akindeji Moronke, Chinonso Stephen, Offoboche Patience, Emmanuel Sule, Galadima Grace and Ojomo Michelle.

Responding, NYSC FCT State Co-ordinator, Mrs Linda O. Amugo, commended the FCT Minister for implementing an upward review of the cash awards from the previous amounts of N100,000 to N200,000 for the ‘Honours Award’ as well as N100,000 instead of N50,000 for the ‘Commendation Award’.

She lauded the awardees for their outstanding contributions towards the development of their host communities and called on other corps members to emulate them in order to have their names written in gold.

One of the awardees, Dr Emwanta Egbe said, he was moved with compassion to provide free medical services and give free drugs to people in his host community in Gwagwalada Area Council.

He said that the award will spur him into rendering more selfless and people-oriented services to the society, in whatever capacity he finds himself.

In another development, the FCT Minister, Senator Bala Abdulkadir Mohammed, Friday donated a Toyota Corolla car to the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), FCT Secretariat, for their official use.

The Minister said the donation of the car is to enhance effective  monitoring and supervision of corps members activities in the territory .

Speaking during the official presentation of the vehicle, NYSC Director-General, Brig-General Maharazu Tsiga commended the minister for the donation and said the NYSC’s management shall remain grateful to him for giving the car at a time the scheme is placing emphasis on monitoring and supervision of corps members.

Funny how time flys just yesterday I was in MDG (NYSC) now its all over. Its all started like a joke n today I can stand tall and say I have contributed my little to the society. I was in group 2,but at the end am happy because I got a recommendation for doing what makes me happy and puting smiles on people faces. Yummy... MDGs big up

Jennifer Lopez was named People magazine’s most beautiful woman in the world on Wednesday, capping a career comeback fueled by her new job on top-rated TV show “American Idol”.


The 41-year-old New York City-born singer and actress joined former winners Halle Berry, Jennifer Garner and Beyonce Knowles to top People’s annual list of the world’s most beautiful people.


“It’s so crazy. Rarely am I left speechless, but I feel honored,” Lopez told People of their accolade. “I feel not worthy, you know? I feel happy and proud. Proud that I’m not 25!.” The Wedding Planner actress, who is married to singer Marc Anthony and took time off to have twins in 2008, has enjoyed a revival in popularity since becoming a judge this year on talent show ‘American Idol’.


Her new single, the dance pop hit, “On The Floor”, has been topping charts around the world, giving Lopez her first Top 10 Billboard single since “All I Have” in 2003.

Lopez, who was dropped by her record label in 2010 after disappointing sales, releases her first new studio album in four years in May, called Love?.

Onyekachi Gilbert Elizabeth, popularly known as Yeka, has won the first ever Nigerian Idol. The 26-year-old Abia state born singer, who grew up in a music conscious family, walked away with the grand prize of N7.5 m, a recording contract and a brand new car after she was announced winner on Saturday, March 26, 2011. The singer, whose family said loved music so much as a child that she'd sing with birds, however had to be dogged to get enlisted in the show in the first place.

"I had my first auditioning in Enugu and I was rejected. Again I went to audition in Calabar and again I was rejected; because I am a very determined person and love to give everything a good fight I came down to the Lagos audition again and here I got a golden ticket," Yeka said.

Yeka's parents recorded an album many years ago and her brother, Iyk Onka, is a performing rock artist. At some point in her life she was a backup artist to a Reggae Gospel group, Buchi and she also did some professional modelling before opting for the Nigerian Idol.
