men are sick
A 33-year-old-man has been arrested for allegedly raping a terminally ill cancer patient in a Bloemfontein hospital, Free State police said on Friday.
Spokesperson Captain Harry Nagel said the man was arrested on Thursday night for the alleged rape of a 50-year-old cancer patient during a night shift at the National Hospital.
“The suspect, a male nurse, was arrested at his place of residence after he was positively identified during a photo identification that was done at the private hospital last night .”
Nagel said the woman could not identify the female accomplice who allegedly helped the man.
Held down
The sick woman’s husband told police the attack happened on October 15.
According to the woman, a woman nurse held her down while a male nurse raped her.
The two staff members were suspended when the news broke earlier this week.
Nagel said police were still waiting for forensic tests.
Police said the man would appear in the Bloemfontein Magistrates Court on Friday morning on a charge of rape.
The Health Professions Council of SA also indicated that it would be investigating the conduct of doctors who apparently ignored the woman’s complaints of the incident

why 4 God sack
Franca Ogbu, a 22-year-old student of Federal University of Technology, Yola, Adamawa State, used to be the cynosure of all eyes . In fact, several suitors have reportedly sought her hand in marriage, a request she often rejected politely, on the ground that she must at least, be in the university before thinking about marriage.
But when her desire of going to school was fulfilled last year, with it came an unfortunate incident that has currently crippled the life of the once beautiful girl. As you read this piece, the Benue State-born is lying critically ill at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, looking a shadow of her old self.
Franca, described as a promising child eventually had her dreams come through after she was offered admission into the Federal University of Technology, Yola, to study Economics. As she bade her parents goodbye, beaming with smiles and a mixed feeling of pains of missing her parents, she left with the little food stuffs her parents managed to get for her.
Franca... at the hospital bed
But her joy was short lived, six months into her education following an acid bath by a male student. Franca, according to the University authority, had on that fateful day, gone to class where she was reading, when all of a sudden, an incident that changed the entire course of her life happened.
Two students reportedly stormed the class. One of them was said to have walked up to the unsuspecting student who at the same time, raised up her head to see who the intruder was, only for the intruder to pour a liquid substance later discovered to be acid on her face.
Explaining, the Zonal Coordinator of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Federal University of Technology, Yola branch, Dr Usman Abubakar, alleged that one Chibuzor Bright was responsible. His action, he said, followed Franca’s objection to his several advances.
Speaking with Crime Guard, Dr Usman said, “Franca Ogbu Adima Paul, is a part I Economics student of Federal University of Technology, Yola (now Modibbo Adama University of Technology). Until the 5th of May, 2010, she was very normal. On that early morning, at about 1.15am, she was reading in the Mechanical Engineering Block of the Institution, in preparation for her examinations when suddenly, someone standing in front of her called her name and on raising her face up, she was spilled with concentrated acid. She is currently in the surgical ward of the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital. The acid affected her head, face, chest, hand and mouth.”
Chibuzor , a final year Civil Engineering student, was alleged to have sponsored the dastardly act by using one Nelson who poured the acid. Already, it was learnt that the School authority has dismissed him after which he was subsequently arrested .
Franca has been lying on
the hospital bed for over one year with her face disfigured, owing to her parent’s inability to get the required amount of money to carry out a plastic surgery on her. Her parents who are peasant farmers have lost hope of their first daughter returning to her normal self. Presently, their greatest worry is not just the fact that the incident has incapacitated their daughter but the painful fact that the alleged assailant is said to be walking the streets freely.
For Franca to get back on her feet and carry on with her education, she needs the sum of N12 million for the surgery. So far, the Bauchi zone of ASUU comprising eight Universities in the North-Eastern Nigeria, as gathered, launched a campaign to raise the needed money to save Franca, with an account opened at the Fidelity Bank UNIMAID Branch. The account number is 6051446636 and the project account name is FRANCA TREATMENT.
The national body of ASUU which condemned the act in its entirety had, during one of its meetings in Ibadan , Oyo state, described the act as ‘a brutal act typically, man’s inhumanity to a fellow human being’”, calling on all well -meaning and sympathetic Nigerians, philanthropists and Civil Society Organizations, to contribute generously towards getting Franca back on her feet.
The hospital, as reliably gathered, had carried about 11 surgical operations on Franca for free. But she reportedly has 13 more operations to go, a financial burden too heavy for the parents to bear.
They therefore called on well meaning Nigerians to come to their rescue............

SAmsom Siasia sacked
Samson SIASIA sacked...
much foot-dragging, the Nigeria Football Federation, NFF yesterday dispensed with the services of Super Eagles Chief Coach, Samson Siasia despite his plea for more time to put together a ‘strong’ team for the future.
However, contrary to speculations that the football house was set to announce former captain of the Eagles, Stephen Keshi as Siasia’s replacement, it was gathered that it ordered its technical committee to sit next week and decide who should take over albeit on a temporary basis.
The Executive Committee which met yesterday only rubber-stamped the recommendation of its Technical Committee headed by Barrister Chris Green which hurriedly met to decide Siasia’s fate after he failed to fulfill part of his contract which was to qualify the Eagles for the 2012 Africa Nations Cup scheduled for Equatorial Guinea/Gabon next January.
Siasia after the match in Abuja
The Aminu Maigari-led NFF has been under tremendous pressure, even though he (Maigari) denied such, to sack the Bayelsa-born gaffer as Nigerians were divided on the issue, with many saying that some other coaches who even qualified for the Nations Cup and got to the semi final were given the boot.
One such Nigerian, himself a former coach of Nigeria’s U-17 team and Super Falcons, Godwin Izilein, queried the call for Siasia’s pardon when he couldn’t meet his own side of the contract terms.
“Why are people calling for Siasia to be given a second chance. There is a precedence, coaches before him were fired even when they qualified the team for the Nations Cup and got to the semi final. Is Siasia a special Nigerian, why should his case be different. My concern is that there is a contract and it should be followed to the letter,” he argued.
Siasia, who was a popular choice of Nigerian fans after Swede handler, Lars Lagerback couldn’t lead the Eagles beyond the first round at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, spent only 11 months at the helm and fell out of favour after his wards were held to a 2-2 draw by Syli National of Guinea, a result that knocked Nigeria out of the Nations Cup, the first time in 26 years.

SAD! Gay Teenager Takes His Own Life In Ottawa
Devastating! Gay Teenager Takes His Own Life In Ottawa
So sad.
We are heartbroken to report that 15-year-old Jamie Hubley took his own life after being a long-time victim of anti-gay bullying.
Jamie kept his struggles as a gay teenager well documented on his blog. Here are some of his crushing words:
"I wish I could be happy, I try, I try, I try … I just want to feel special to someone."
"I hate being the only open gay guy in my school … It f—ing sucks, I really want to end it."
And here's what Jamie wrote on his final blog post:
"I'm tired of life really. Its so hard, Im sorry, I cant take it anymore."
"Its just too hard. I dont want to wait 3 more years, this hurts too much. How do you even know It will get better? Its not."
"Remember me as a Unicorn."
Here's what a fellow student wrote about Jamie, remembering his spirit:
"You fought a hard battle, doing things most kids wouldn’t ever have the guts to do. You were brave, and strong and I admire you so much for everything you’ve done. You went through stuff that no kid should ever have to face in their lifetime, but somehow through all the hardships you still shone at school…You left a big footprint in everyone’s heart, and you will always be remembered."
Our thought and prayers go out to Jamie's family, friends, and loved ones during this unbelievably difficult time.
Let this be a wake-up call to the world that anti-gay bullying isn't only a problem in America! We MUST do more to fight against this NOW!
It shouldn't take this many gay teens committing suicide to show us that something more needs to be done. A law must be enacted against this kind of behavior in the U.S., Canada, and abroad!
Rest in peace, Jamie.

Charlie's Angels' Canceled by ABC
Charlie's Angels' Canceled by ABC
So much for the return of "Charlie's Angels."
ABC has canceled the revamp of the 1970s TV show after just four episodes, the network confirms to TheWrap.
The series, which starred Minka Kelly, Annie Ilonzeh and Rachael Taylor as three young female detectives in Miami, had floundered in the ratings, though it posted an 8 percent increase in the all-important adults 18-49 demographic for its most recent episode Thursday. Its Sept. 22 premiere posted a lukewarm 2.1/6 in the demo and generally went downhill from there, plunging 20 percent for its Oct. 7 episode to a 1.2/4.
ABC plans to continue running the remaining episodes on Thursdays at 8.
"Charlie's Angels" joins NBC's "The Playboy Club" and "Free Agents" on the list of new offerings to be pulled so far this season. Not officially canceled yet but not looking promising: CBS' Kevin Dillon comedy "How to Be a Gentleman," which has halted production and been moved to Saturday nights; and the CW reality offering "Hater," which has been removed from the network's schedule, with the possibility that it may air sometime in the future, likely in the summer.

For 91 days, the whole of Africa had its eyes on the
Big Brother Amplified TV reality show: the fights, the
kisses, the shower scenes, the gossips which all
tallied up to give a creative and power packed show
made up of 26 contestants from around the
continent.
Reports from the Big Brother Amplified website
suggest that this year’s edition was the most viewed
from cable television; also recording the most
followership online. But most will agree that one of
the Nigerian contestants, the notoriousKaren Igho
was the most prominent as she stood out right from
the beginning of the show to the very end.And oh
yea, she also won and walked away with N32M!
Let’s do a quick survey: Facebooksuggests that
Karen has about 9500 ‘Likes’ on her fan page. The
closest to that isWezawith 7000 plus. Karen
managed to summon all the controversies around her
into one big punch and convincingly knocked out any
other contestants who stood in her way.
Karen’s strategy was simple – she says ‘I was just
myself’.
We might have seen Karen’s down to earth
mannerisms and her sometimes over-the-top
tantrums in the house but we knew little about her
personal life. Most viewers who had either praised or
chastised her didn’t knowKaren’s story.
She claims that her 45-year-old mother was a
gangster and she (Karen) worked as a stripper in
Europe before coming back to Nigeria to participate
in theNext Movie Starreality show. It’s been a
rough one for the light skinned lady, little wonder
why she wears a tough skin.
And on her father, she says ‘I don’t really know my
father. He married my mother at a very young age
but now he is dead. He died of HIV AIDS. I am not
ashamed to say it. I wish I saw him to ask him
questions, to ask him why he blamed me for things I
didn’t do. I didn’t get the chance to tell him I loved
him.’
Speaking at a press conference organized by MNET
Nigeriaat Planet One, Lagos on her return last
week, Karen poured out her heart out in an
interactive ‘Question and Answer’ session.
‘The journey wasn’t an easy one. Whatever anyone
said about me, good or bad, I thank you and I say one
love. I had no strategy unlike what most people think.
I was just myself.’
As per being a role model, Karen says we shouldn’t
expect her to change from the character she
portrayed in the house. ‘It’s real life in there and out
here, so I won’t stop anything’.
Who would agree that most men watched the BBA
show because of Karen’s boob job? A lot of guys
won’t deny too, they outrightly sat in front of their TV
sets waiting for her to gesticulate just to grab a
glimpse of her ‘endowment’. Others have criticised
and frowned at her ‘enhancement’, but Karen says
there’s a reason behind it. ‘My boobs were never a
strategy, when I discovered I had lumps in my
breasts, I had removed them and had the boob job
done to prevent any further occurrence. It’s funny
how my mother got to hear on the show. My 17-year-
old sister recently discovered lumps in her breasts
too’.
Now, she ‘wants to create awareness. I want people
to know that the disease is real. I am going to use
part of my winnings to do a massive campaign about
this disease.’
Talking about her winning BBA6, Karen said ‘I didn’t
know I was going to win even though I didn’t see
anybody as my competitor. My head was straight. I
saw everybody as potential winner. That is why we
were in the house in the first place. Anyways, we are
all stars.’
And when asked if she would ever go back to the
house (maybe for a BBA all winners edition), she
responded ‘Of course I will, so Africa will vote for me
again!’ She also added ‘As per the money, I will think
of what to do with it later on. But I will keep to my
words. I will give some to my friends in the house like
I said I would.’

EArly sex increases Cervical cancer risk
‘Early sex increases cervical cancer risk’
print email
Mike Iroezindu, a medical practitioner, has said that exposure to sex before the age of 18 increases the risk of cervical cancer.
“Having sex before the age of 18 increases the risk of Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) which is the causative factor for cervical cancer,” he said. “Immature cells seem to be susceptible to it.” He said that cervical cancer was among the most common cancers that affect a woman’s reproductive organ. “When a woman is exposed to HPV, her immune typically prevents the virus from doing harm, however, in a small group of women, the virus survives for years before it eventually converts some cells on the surface of the cervix into cancer cells,” he said.
According to him, cancer in general begins when healthy cells acquire a genetic mutation that turns them into abnormal cells. “There are two types of the cervical cancer; one is squamous cell carcinoma that begins in the thin, flat cells that line the bottom of the cervix,” he said. “This type accounts for 80 to 90 per cent of cervical cancer in women. There is also the Adeno carcinomas that occur in the glandular cells that line the upper portion of the cervix, this type makes up to 10 to 20 per cent of cervical cancer.”
He said that early cervical cancer generally produced no signs and symptoms, and advocated for regular pap screening. “The pap test detects abnormal cell growth or formation in the cervix,” he said.
He said that as the cancer developed, some of the symptoms that might be experienced include vaginal bleeding after intercourse. Other symptoms, he said, include watery and bloody vaginal discharge that might be heavy and have a foul smell. In some cases, he said, pelvic pain as well as pain during intercourse could also be experienced. Diamond Cancer Campaign

Am A succeSS
wow
The last time i checked, God did not fail...
When am down and tired of life struggles
I just remember that he cannot fail
When am about to give up in my dreams
A silent voice keeps telling me,its not over until i win
when my bones are week and my legs cant stand anymore
I just smile cause i know my purpose wont be cut short
when i cant control that tears anymore
I remember, tears of joy is not far from me.
when the road is dark and still
I know help is on the way soon.
when am about to give up on everything
I just know my time is now and am a success...

AMY WINEHOUSE DEAd...
Amy Winehouse, the beehived soul-jazz diva whose self-destructive habits overshadowed a distinctive musical talent, was found dead Saturday in her London home, police said. She was 27.
Winehouse shot to fame with the album "Back to Black,'' whose blend of jazz, soul, rock and classic pop was a global hit. It won five Grammys and made Winehouse with her black beehive hairdo and old-fashioned sailor tattoos one of music's most recognizable stars.
Police confirmed that a 27-year-old female was pronounced dead at the home in Camden Square northern London; the cause of death was not immediately known. London Ambulance Services said Winehouse had died before the two ambulance crews it sent arrived at the scene.
An ambulance could be seen parked beneath the trees outside her London home, and the whole street was cordoned off by police tape. Officers kept onlookers away from the scene.
Last month, Winehouse cancelled her European comeback tour after she swayed and slurred her way through barely recognizable songs in her first show in the Serbian capital of Belgrade. Booed and jeered off stage, she flew home and her management said she would take time off to recover.
"I didn't go out looking to be famous,'' Winehouse told the Associated Press when "Back to Black'' was released. "I'm just a musician.''
But in the end, the music was overshadowed by fame, and by Winehouse's demons. Tabloids lapped up the erratic stage appearances, drunken fights, stints in hospital and rehab clinics. Performances became shambling, stumbling train wrecks, watched around the world on the Internet.
Born in 1983 to taxi driver Mitch Winehouse and his pharmacist wife Janis, Winehouse grew up in the north London suburbs, and was set on a showbiz career from an early age. When she was 10, she and a friend formed a rap group, Sweet 'n' Sour Winehouse was Sour that she later described as "the little white Jewish Salt 'n' Pepa.''
She attended the Sylvia Young Theatre School, a factory for British music and acting moppets, later went to the Brit School, a performing arts academy in the "Fame'' mould, and was originally signed to ``Pop Idol'' svengali Simon Fuller's 19 Management.
But Winehouse was never a packaged teen star, and always resisted being pigeonholed.
Her jazz-influenced 2003 debut album, "Frank,'' was critically praised and sold well in Britain. It earned Winehouse an Ivor Novello songwriting award, two Brit nominations and a spot on the shortlist for the Mercury Music Prize.
But Winehouse soon expressed dissatisfaction with the disc, saying she was ``only 80 per cent behind'' the album.
"Frank'' was followed by a slump during which Winehouse broke up with her boyfriend, suffered a long period of writer's block and, she later said, smoked a lot of marijuana.
"I had writer's block for so long,'' she said in 2007. "And as a writer, your self-worth is literally based on the last thing you wrote. .. I used to think, 'What happened to me?'
"At one point it had been two years since the last record and (the record company) actually said to me, 'Do you even want to make another record?' I was like, 'I swear it's coming.' I said to them, 'Once I start writing I will write and write and write. But I just have to start it.'''
The album she eventually produced was a sensation.
Released in Britain in the fall of 2006, "Back to Black'' brought Winehouse global fame. Working with producers Mark Ronson and Salaam Remi and soul-funk group the Dap-Kings, Winehouse fused soul, jazz, doo-wop and, above all, a love of the girl-groups of the early 1960s with lyrical tales of romantic obsession and emotional excess.
"Back to Black'' was released in the United States in March 2007 and went on to win five Grammy awards, including song and record of the year for "Rehab.''
Music critic John Aizlewood attributed her trans-Atlantic success to a fantastic voice and a genuinely original sound.
"A lot of British bands fail in America because they give America something Americans do better that's why most British hip-hop has failed,'' he said. ``But they won't have come across anything quite like Amy Winehouse.''
Winehouse's rise was helped by her distinctive look black beehive of hair, thickly lined cat eyes, girly tattoos and her tart tongue.
She was famously blunt in her assessment of her peers, once describing Dido's sound as "background music the background to death'' and saying of pop princess Kylie Minogue, "she's not an artist ... she's a pony.''
The songs on "Black to Black'' detailed breakups and breakdowns with a similar frankness. Lyrically, as in life, Winehouse wore her heart on her sleeve.
"I listen to a lot of '60s music, but society is different now,'' Winehouse said in 2007. "I'm a young woman and I'm going to write about what I know.''
Even then, Winehouse's performances were sometimes shambolic, and she admitted she is "a terrible drunk.''
Increasingly, her personal life began to overshadow her career.
She acknowledged struggling with eating disorders and told a newspaper that she had been diagnosed as manic depressive but refused to take medication. Soon accounts of her erratic behaviour, cancelled concerts and drink- and drug-fueled nights began to multiply.
Photographs caught her unsteady on her feet or vacant-eyed, and she appeared unhealthily thin, with scabs on her face and marks on her arms.
There were embarrassing videos released to the world on the Internet. One showed an addled Winehouse and Babyshambles singer Pete Doherty playing with newborn mice. Another, for which Winehouse apologized, showed her singing a racist ditty to the tune of a children's song.
Winehouse's managers went to increasingly desperate lengths to keep the wayward star on the straight and narrow.
Though she was often reported to be working on new material, fans got tired of waiting for the much-promised followup to "Back to Black.''
Occasional bits of recording saw the light of day. Her rendition of The Zutons' "Valerie'' was a highlight of producer Mark Ronson's 2007 album "Version,'' and she recorded the pop classic "It's My Party'' for the 2010 Quincy Jones album ``Q: Soul Bossa Nostra.''
But other recording projects with Ronson, one of the architects of the success of "Back to Black,'' came to nothing.
She also had run-ins with the law. In April 2008, Winehouse was cautioned by police for assault after she slapped a man during a raucous night out.
The same year she was investigated by police, although not charged, after a tabloid newspaper published a video that appeared to show her smoking crack cocaine.
In 2010, Winehouse pleaded guilty to assaulting a theatre manager who asked her to leave a family Christmas show because she'd had too much to drink. She was given a fine and a warning to stay out of trouble by a judge who praised her for trying to clean up her act.
In May 2007 in Miami, she married music industry hanger-on Blake Fielder-Civil, but the honeymoon was brief. That November, Fielder-Civil was arrested for an attack on a pub manager the year before. Fielder-Civil later pleaded guilty to assaulting barman James King and then offering him 200,000 pounds (US$400,000) to keep quiet about it.
Winehouse stood by "my Blake'' throughout his trial, often blowing kisses at him from the court's public gallery and wearing a heart-shaped pin labeled "Blake'' in her hair at concerts. But British newspapers reported extramarital affairs while Fielder-Civil was behind bars.

NYSC Alawee increased...
Youth corps members are now to receive N19, 800.00 as allowance with effect from March 2011, the Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Maharazu Tsiga, has announced.
Mr. Tsiga made this known in Abuja on Monday during a visit by a team from Barry University, Miami, Florida and Africans in Diaspora Partnership.
The NYSC members were receiving N9, 775.00 before now, and President Goodluck Jonathan had in his 2010 campaign tour, promised the increase.
According to Mr. Tsiga, the allowance of the NYSC members will be paid in arrears, to include the 2010 Batch ‘B' members, who finished their service year on July 7.
Mr. Tsiga expressed his happiness with President Goodluck Jonathan, for considering the plight of the corps members, stating that the scheme would work hard to realise its objective.
He also expressed satisfaction with the visit of the team, stating that it was timely, as seven youth corps members were successful in the Entrepreneurs competition organised by the Africans in Diaspora Partnership.
"I can assure you that the resources expended in the training and empowerment of the seven entrepreneurs has not been wasted since all of them are doing very well.
"Indeed, we see in them great potentials for wealth and job creation in the near future, that is why we are looking forward to greater and expanded opportunities for more corps members as talents abound in the scheme,'' Mr. Tsiga said.
He said that the contribution of NYSC members underscored national relevance of the scheme, adding that the scheme would ensure that the gains were not lost to the threat of post-service unemployment.
According to him, the agencies which partnered with the scheme on skills acquisition are the Central Bank of Nigeria, National Directorate of Employment and the MDGs Office.
Earlier, Adewale Alonge, leader of the delegation, had praised the scheme for its foresight and readiness to ensure that NYSC members were well equipped to stand on their feet, without looking for government employment after the scheme.

J.Lo named PeopLe’s mOst Beautiful womAn
Jennifer Lopez was named People magazine’s most beautiful woman in the world on Wednesday, capping a career comeback fueled by her new job on top-rated TV show “American Idol”.
The 41-year-old New York City-born singer and actress joined former winners Halle Berry, Jennifer Garner and Beyonce Knowles to top People’s annual list of the world’s most beautiful people.
“It’s so crazy. Rarely am I left speechless, but I feel honored,” Lopez told People of their accolade. “I feel not worthy, you know? I feel happy and proud. Proud that I’m not 25!.” The Wedding Planner actress, who is married to singer Marc Anthony and took time off to have twins in 2008, has enjoyed a revival in popularity since becoming a judge this year on talent show ‘American Idol’.
Her new single, the dance pop hit, “On The Floor”, has been topping charts around the world, giving Lopez her first Top 10 Billboard single since “All I Have” in 2003.
Career renaissance
Lopez, who was dropped by her record label in 2010 after disappointing sales, releases her first new studio album in four years in May, called Love?.
Lopez told People she felt better now than she did in her 20s. “In my 20s, I just wasn’t there in my mind and my soul and my spirit. It’s just great to be in the position I’m in now and be able to share that with the world.” Known for her flawless skin and curvy figure, she attributed looking good to her personal life. “I think it’s because I have a lot of love in my life. I feel lucky to be an attractive person, but I’ve always felt that real beauty always comes from your heart.”
Since signing up last year for ‘American Idol’ - the most-watched TV show in the United States - Lopez has been named the celebrity face of companies and products ranging from beauty firm L’Oreal to Venus razors and the Gucci children’s clothes collection.

Yeka is Nigeria's first Idol
Onyekachi Gilbert Elizabeth, popularly known as Yeka, has won the first ever Nigerian Idol. The 26-year-old Abia state born singer, who grew up in a music conscious family, walked away with the grand prize of N7.5 m, a recording contract and a brand new car after she was announced winner on Saturday, March 26, 2011. The singer, whose family said loved music so much as a child that she'd sing with birds, however had to be dogged to get enlisted in the show in the first place.
"I had my first auditioning in Enugu and I was rejected. Again I went to audition in Calabar and again I was rejected; because I am a very determined person and love to give everything a good fight I came down to the Lagos audition again and here I got a golden ticket," Yeka said.
Yeka's parents recorded an album many years ago and her brother, Iyk Onka, is a performing rock artist. At some point in her life she was a backup artist to a Reggae Gospel group, Buchi and she also did some professional modelling before opting for the Nigerian Idol.

Jos CRISIS, WOMEN PROTEST...
Plateau State governor, Jonah Jang, broke down in tears on Monday in Jos while addressing thousands of protesting women, including female students of the University of Jos, at the State House.
The women, clad in black, showed up in their thousands and wailed and sang sad songs for several hours in Jos, the state capital. The women were protesting the recent violence which has claimed the lives of hundreds of people in Jos.
The governor, overwhelmed by the wailing women, some of whom flung themselves to the ground and rolled around, could not stop the tears from rolling down his face as he addressed them. His wife, Ngo Talatu, who welcomed the protesters, also wept quietly throughout her husband’s speech.
The spokesperson for the protesting women, Rhoda Wal, condemned the failure of the government to address the violence.
“Innocent and harmless women, children and students are being killed in the attacks in our communities and nobody is doing anything about it,” Mrs. Wal said.
“Few attackers were arrested but that was the last that we heard about them while our sons who are defending their communities are indiscriminately arrested and put in prisons,” she added.
The women also complained that they and their children were no longer safe in their homes and in the markets, and urged the appropriate authorities to do something urgent to address the situation. They also protested against the continued presence of the military’s Special Task Force, whom they accused of being biased, and urged the federal government to reconstitute the force.
The protesters alleged that specific sections of Jos and places of worship were being protected by armoured tanks and heavily armed security personnel while other areas were unguarded and left wide open to attackers. Hausa youth and University of Jos students clashed over the weekend, leading to an intervention by the task force which ended with a few students shot.
“Market women are not safe in their markets and children are not safe in the schools; the majority of casualties in the Christmas Eve bomb blast in Kabong were women,” said Ms. Wal.
The women demanded the immediate relocation of the Farin Gada tomato market, Angwar Rogo settlement, and Bauchi road motor-park, saying that these places constituted security threats to the university communities. They also called on retired military officers, former governors, and traditional rulers in the state to mediate in the crisis.
Operation Rainbow to the rescue
Mr. Jang, pulling himself together, responded to the women by saying that the continued crisis in the metropolis was a ploy to disrupt the ongoing voter registration and forthcoming general elections.
The governor said that Plateau State and federal governments were working on a security outfit he called ‘Operation Rainbow’, to take over the maintenance of security in the state from the military.
Mr. Jang also said that the outfit would comprise of police, retired military officers, and villagers who would be trained to provide security for their various communities.
The governor appealed to the protesters to be patient with the military, saying that they were humans and not saints, an appeal the women rejected with resounding chants of “No!”
Mr. Jang promised the women that all markets close to the University of Jos would be relocated to ensure the security of students and staff.
The speaker of the State House of Assembly, Istifanus Mwansat, also informed the protesters that the legislature was working with the executive to find a lasting solution to the crisis. The protesters had earlier stopped at the State Police Command headquarters where they presented their grievances to the commissioner of police, Abdulrahman Akano.
Court of Appeal resumes sitting
Judges of the Court of Appeal have resumed work in Jos after they rounded off a routine sitting in Gombe State on Friday. The return has put an end to speculation that the court had been relocated to Gombe State following the persistent crisis in Plateau State.
Ambrose Momoh, the director of press and public relations, Federal Ministry of Justice, Abuja, had said the rumour was untrue. Mr. Momoh had told the News Agency of Nigeria that he was not aware of any such order.
Also, public schools in Jos remained closed on Monday as students did not resume despite the directive from the federal government that all schools should open following the expiration of the three weeks ordered for voter registration.

Earlier hormone therapy elevates breast cancer risk
CANCER AWARENESS CAMPAIGN
Growing evidence about the risks of breast cancer and other serious illnesses posed by hormone therapy for menopause has led many women to give up the drugs and many doctors to stop recommending them.
But there has been a lingering belief that for younger women in the early stages of menopause, hormone risks may be negligible, at least for a while. So those who are really suffering from hot flashes, insomnia and other symptoms are often told that it is probably all right to take the drugs, as long as they use the lowest possible dose for the shortest possible time. Some researchers are even testing an idea, called the timing hypothesis, that starting hormone treatment early in menopause may help protect women from heart disease.
Now, information from a vast study in Britain suggests that the women thought to be at the lowest risk from hormones may actually be at the highest risk, at least when it comes to breast cancer. The study found that women with the greatest risk of breast cancer from hormones were those who took them earliest - before or soon after menopause began.
The new findings, published Friday in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute, are not the strongest type of evidence: They do not come from a randomized trial, an experiment in which people are picked at random to take either a drug or a placebo and are then studied and compared over time. Instead, the British study was observational, meaning that the women being studied had made their own decisions about whether and when to take hormones.
There is always a chance in observational studies that there is some underlying difference between people who choose to take drugs and those who do not, and that the difference - not just the drugs they have taken - may help account for different health outcomes. Observational findings are sometimes disproved by randomized trials. But this particular observational study also has a unique strength - it included more than 1 million postmenopausal women, 1 in 4 British women who were ages 50 to 64 during the enrollment period, from May 1996 to December 2001.
The research, called the Million Women Study, found that in women ages 50 to 59 who had never taken hormones, 0.3 percent a year developed breast cancer. The rate was higher, 0.46 percent a year, in women who started taking the most commonly used hormones - estrogen combined with progestin - five or more years after menopause began. But it was highest of all - 0.61 percent a year - in women who started taking the drugs before or less than five years after menopause began. And the risk was increased even in women who took the drugs for less than five years.
The lead investigator of the study, Dame Valerie Beral, a professor of epidemiology at the University of Oxford, said her research group had decided to look at the interval between the start of menopause and the start of treatment because other studies had found evidence of higher risk among women who started earlier. But in the other studies, the number of women who had started early was relatively small, and so the evidence was not statistically significant.
In the Million Women Study, 90 percent of the women taking hormones had begun them before or within five years of the start of menopause, so there was a better chance of finding an answer, Dame Valerie said.
One of the studies that had detected a possible but inconclusive link between earlier hormone use and increased cancer risk was the Women’s Health Initiative, the randomized trial that in 2002 found that combined hormones were causing small but significant increases in the risk of breast cancer, heart disease, strokes and blood clots in the lungs.
Dr. Rowan Chlebowski, an investigator in the Women’s Health Initiative and a medical oncologist at the Los Angeles Biomedical Research Institute, wrote in an editorial in the cancer journal that the Million Women Study provided “substantial support” for the findings from other studies. He said the new findings made it harder than ever to define any safe timing or duration for hormone use. Women who believe they need the hormones for severe symptoms should try to stop taking them after a year or so,he said.
But Dr. JoAnn E. Manson, also an investigator on the Women’s Health Initiative and a professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School and Brigham and Women’s Hospital, cautioned that the Million Women findings were not conclusive because the study was observational.“The jury is still out,” Manson said.
Women should not take hormones unless they really need them, she said, but those who do need them should not be afraid to take a low dose for a limited time.“It may have a favorable benefit-risk profile in many cases,” Manson said.
